The usual cause of these strange noises is a damaged engine mount. The engine generates enormous power and has to be securely connected to the frame to prevent it from moving and damaging itself. The engine's sensitive components must also be protected against vibrations caused by driving. Two rubber, liquid-filled engine mounts lock the engine in place. Their liquid fillings absorb vibrations and keep the engine steady. In time, the rubber can crack, and the liquid will leak.
